ある日の早朝、何か特別礼拝があったのでしょう、近くの正教会から典礼音楽が流れてきていました。窓辺でぼんやりその旋律を聞いていると、ちょうどそこに知り合いのアメリカ人宣教師が通りかかりました。"Hey, what do you think of that song?"と正教会の方角を指しながら、彼女は首をすくめ、私に質問してきました。
明らかにこういった種類の曲を嫌がっているのが彼女のうちに見て取れたので、気を遣って何も返事をせずにいると、「なんだかお葬式のような感じね。気分が滅入ってしまう。」と言い残して、去って行きました。
〈お葬式のような感じ、、気分が滅入る、、、うーん、たしかに西洋的な教会感覚で言えば、そうだろうな。それはよく分かる。でも東方世界に生きる多くの信仰者たちにとって、こういった旋律は「気分を滅入らせる」ものではなく、むしろ心を天の聖所へと向かわせる美しく慰めに満ちたメロディーであることも、この地に息づく人間として私は知っていると思う。。〉
ユダヤ教のシナゴーグにおいても、西洋教会においても、東方教会においても、詩篇歌はそれぞれ独自の色合いと旋律を帯びつつ、生きやがて死んでいく無数の魂の祈り、嘆き、喜びの歌となってきました。
古今東西のキリスト教会が生み出してきた讃歌の多様性は、混沌ではなく豊かさだと私は思っています。それは紅葉の美にも似ていて、個々の色はこんなにも違うのに、全体としてみた場合、そこには驚くべきハーモニーと色彩の調和があるのです。
そして全ての諸現象を貫くその中に、そしてその上に、一つの御思い（Mind, Νούς）があり、一人の創造主がおり、その御方が、永遠なる一つの目的と成就に向かって、今日も働いておられます。なんとすばらしいことでしょうか！
